Electronic exams

An electronic exam refers to an exam taken on a computer or mobile device to verify a student’s competence. The teacher creates an electronic exam in a system of their choice in advance and assigns it an exact time or a specific time period during which the exam should be taken. In addition, the teacher determines whether the electronic exam is taken in a supervised exam room or whether it is possible to take it independently of the location.

At the Tampere Universities, electronic exams are mainly organised using the TUNI EXAM system. In addition, electronic exams can be organised, for example, in the TUNI Moodle learning platform or with the O365 Forms tool. Moodle and Forms exams are typically online exams that are taken on your own computer at your chosen location.

TUNI EXAM

TUNI EXAM is the electronic exam service of Tampere Universities. It enables the flexible organization and completion of electronic exams. Exams are taken in centralized, camera-monitored exam rooms during a time period defined by the teacher.

The EXAM system is maintained and developed by the national EXAM consortium, which includes 28 Finnish higher education institutions. More information about the consortium’s activities can be found on the EXAM consortium page.

Creating an exam

Below you will find instructions for creating an exam in TUNI EXAM. The TUNI EXAM Quick Guide for Teachers also includes illustrated instructions for logging in and assessing exam submissions.

For instruction on creating a maturity test, see the section below.

Exam Assessment

According to Section 27 of the Tampere University Degree regulations, study attainments must be assessed and the results recorded within 21 days of their submission or the final date by which they should have been submitted.  Exceptions apply to exams taken between 1 June and 31 July or between the second and third teaching periods.

Similarly, Section 25 of TAMK’s Degree Regulations states that students are informed of the grade by entering it into the record of credits within three weeks of the examination. Teachers’ free periods are not included in the assessment period.

A retake opportunity must be arranged within a reasonable time after the original exam. There must be sufficient time for students to prepare between the assessment and the retake. Information about retake and grade improvement opportunities must be provided at the beginning of the course implementation.

Below are detailed instructions for assessing exams in TUNI EXAM.

EXAM rooms

TUNI EXAM rooms are available on all Tampere University Campuses, at TAMK’s main campus, and in Seinäjoki and Pori. More information about the exam rooms can be found on the EXAM-facilities page of the TUNI EXAM website.

Access to exam rooms granted via an access card, which can be either a student card or a separate access card.

Students must follow the Terms of Use for Exam Facilities. The Terms of Use can be found on a dedicated page on TUNI EXAM website.

Exam supervision includes real-time and recorded audio and video monitoring, access control, and random inspection rounds in the rooms. If a student is found to have violated the Terms of Use but no suspicion of misconduct arises, they will receive a warning by email.
If misconduct is suspected, the university’s official misconduct procedure will be initiated according to institutional guidelines.

Software and additional exam equipment

TUNI EXAM offers a selection of approximately 30 software applications to support various exam needs. The available tools include options for calculation, programming, and statistical analysis among others.

Some exam computers are also equipped with additional exam equipment such as headphones and Wacom drawing displays.

A full list of the software and additional equipment is available on TUNI EXAM computers is provided on a dedicated page.

Accessibility

Students can request individual study arrangements for electronic exams organised in TUNI EXAM.

At Tampere University and TAMK, there are accessible exam rooms that are also quieter than standard exam rooms. In addition, teachers can create personal exams, which allow for accommodations such as extra time or splitting the exam into parts.

From an accessibility perspective it is essential that exam instructions ate clear and easy to understand. It is also recommended to guide students in the instructions by addressing the following:

  • Should essays include headings or is there specific structure expected?
  • What type of text is expected?
  • What is the expected length of the answer?
  • For multiple-choice questions, clarify how scoring is determined and whether multiple correct answers are possible.

During exam booking, it is helpful to list the software required for the exam so that students can practice using them in advance.

During the exam itself, instructions should clearly state:

  • Which software is required to complete the exam
  • Whether there are any attachments (e.g. PDFs, images) included in the exam

Maturity test

The thesis supervisor creates the maturity test in the TUNI EXAM system as a personal exam. There is no separate exam type for maturity tests in TUNI EXAM.

At Tampere University, the exam period for maturity tests is two weeks, and at TAMK, it is at least one week.

Joint exams

A joint exam refers to an electronic exam where either examiners or students participate in the creation or execution of the exam from different universities (two or more) through their own organisation’s EXAM system.

See instructions concerning Joint exams from Eduuni-wiki.

Exam visit

Exam visit means that a student takes their own university’s exam in another university’s EXAM room.

See instructions concerning EXAM visits from Eduuni-wiki.

Test exam

You can practice using the TUNI EXAM system by creating a new exam and adding questions to the exam. The exam Questions page also has a preview function, which allows you to see what the exam will look like in the exam situation. The exam can be attached to an implementation of your choice or the test course EXAM-1 or EXAM-2. Your exam will not be visible to anyone if you do not publish the exam.

Teachers can also familiarise themselves with the system from a student’s perspective and take a general test exam or their own exam in the EXAM room. The test exam works like a real exam, so remember to follow the Terms of Use for Exam Facilities. Log into the system as a student, after which you can find the test exam with the exam search function or directly through the link below:
